2.1 Plastic optical fibers

Our team has obtained extensive experience in the area of Plastic Optical Fiber (POF). Our interest has been focused not only on the evaluation and exploitation of the POF as a communication channel, but also on the attempt to improve the transmission characteristics of the channel itself.More specifically, POFs have been examined experimentally in order to confirm their transmission capabilities in terms of capacity applying advanced modulation schemes, i.e. several Discrete Multitone (DMT) versions. Performance amelioration has been also achieved by optical mode filtering at the receiving side, reducing, this way, the POF modal dispersion. Moreover, we have obtained the know how to increase the bandwidth and decrease the power losses of POFs by treating them thermally according to a certain procedure. Many papers have been published by our group in this scientific area.
